Lynnderella Rockafeller - The Week That Polish Ate Itself

Hi Goddesses

When I originally started this blog, I thought it might be a mouthpiece for my opinions, thoughts and commentary on the wider world and loves of my life.  What I didn't expect was that one day I would be writing about how one of my passions has done its best to destroy itself, and the niche market it represents.   This has been one HELLUVA week in Nailsville :)

Ok, we're going to zoom out a little bit first of all.    Frankening and Indie Polish are relatively new terms.  When I became a Polishaholic a year ago, pretty much the only polish maker / frankener out there was a woman called Lynnderella who made insanely gorgeous and HTF glitterbombs.

Gradually, her success encouraged others to dabble, first privately, and then through other outlets - pre-ordering through Facebook, Etsy, BigCartel, their own websites.   So,  6 months ago, we had Lynnderella and maybe 5 or 6 other big name indie polish-makers, and that was it.  And then it all exploded.

At first it was in a good way.   A lady named Leah Ann Rowe agreed to stock Lynnderella on her website, and Lynns (as they were affectionately known) went from being a niche, highly sought after item, to something that was known to the masses, and clamoured for.  Oh, NEVER has there been so much clamour, but more on that later.

The abundance of demand over supply of Lynns led a trickle down explosion, and before you knew it, the other 5 or 6 great indie polish makers were wiped out of stock.  ENTIRELY.  Some of them so much so that it took them 2 months to rebuild their inventory!

So, what happened?  More trickle down.  A new crop of indies sprang up to fill the gap in the market.  But this time, there was a difference. For every great new indie brand, there was at least 1 if not 2 that were not in it for the passion, or the artistry.   To quote a dear friend, suddenly "Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrybody decided they were Lynnderella", and rushed to create their own Etsy stores with their own indie polishes, but without the imagination, textural brilliance, or magic.    Suddenly we had polishes that my daughter could have made - 2 or 3 types of glitter, shook up in a bottle, and then mixed with every type of coloured base under the sun.  THAT ladies, is not your own polish line; it's over-priced laziness you should be ashamed of.

So, let's skip back again.   Around the turn of the year, Leah Ann decides to stock Lynnderella. The crowds go wild.  Too wild.  Leah Ann can't cope, polishes are oversold and all sorts of diabolical hooha ensues.  Leah Ann, bless her, keeps trying different ways to get the demand met, each one meeting with disaster, and Lynnderella releases a NEW collection, pushing demand even higher.

It's at this point, that another polishmaker, Cover Band, release a polish called Sticks and Stones.  The polish is not a dead on dupe for Lynnderella's coveted Connect The Dots (CTD) but it's close.  It's also available, and deprived Polish-zillas gobble it up like it's going out of fashion.    Lynnderella is offended that anyone would try to copy her polish, ignoring both the fact that she has refused to increase supply, and that it happens to Deborah Lippmann at least twice a year.   Her response is to decry the act as not in the spirit of "Lovely Is As Lovely Does", the name of her new collection.   The fact that she is in BUSINESS escapes her.

She is also affronted that people are selling her polish for money on ebay.  They are converting a $15 purchase into $50 and upwards sales.  The artist in Lynn cannot fathom this.

So after the hooha dies down, more polishmakers expand their range to contain a CTD dupe, giving the Polish-zillas the supply we crave.   Leah Ann hits on a wishlist system, which although slow, satisfies the demand for Lynns, and takes it upon herself to protect Lynn by not selling her polishes to anyone that might want to resell them on ebay. She scrutinises bulk orders for clues that people might be profitting from Lynnderella, and that is her first mistake.   As a middleman, Leah Ann should not really care who she sells them to, and although it's sweet that she wants to get the product to genuine end-users, again it's not particularly commercial.  She's also fighting a battle that's not her own, and maybe only she understands the reasons she showed Lynnderella such fierce loyalty.

So, little interlude.  Crumpet, as you know, buys a HELLA lot of polishes.   Crumpet tends to go wild on a Sunday afternoon, and one Sunday in April I bought 6 polishes from one of the 100s of Etsy stores that now sell polish - Victoriana.  A couple of weeks later, I am told my polish should arrive mid-May, and when it's not here by the end of May (which is a LOT of patience for a Crumpet), I politely enquire where they are.   And get no response.   I won't get a response to 5 other emails either, and this week, one of Victoriana's stockists publicly pulled the plug on her, for the same reasons I am mentioning her now - unfilled orders and promises.

So why share this particular story with you ?  Well, the indie industry is like any other - you get stars, and you get shite. You get people who make great product and pride themselves on customer service.  And you get others who only want to make a quick buck. You get some who are so passionate about quality control they will replace your polish almost before you ask, and others who couldn't care less.  Be careful.  Know who you're dealing with.  Don't fall for the hype.

And then we get to this week.  A week when a lot of us were excited because Lynnderella would be releasing a new collection, and Leah Ann would be taking wishlists for it.  And then the shit storm began.

For a while, a few of us have wondered who was selling the Lynns that go for up to $200 on ebay, especially as some of them were special LEs that never even got to Leah Ann.  One bored / frustrated / curious person did some digging, and discovered all sorts of internet crumbs which suggested they were being sold by none other than Lynnderella's brother.  That's right, the brother of the person who was offended by the earlier ebay profiteering.

Lynnderella releases a statement littered with phrases which suggest she thinks of herself as an unassailable Queen, and confesses that she gave the polishes to her brother TO SELL to help him out of financial dire straits.  She announces that she is a "not a frankener, (but an) artist and designer" and "that it took decades of self-work, research, training, study and paying attention to processing visual information to be able to create Lynnderella's lacquers".  Decades?  Really ?

It's a post that doesn't go down well with the polish community, or Nail World, as she refers to us.  We think it sounds pompous, a little up one's arse, and well ... wrong.   Don't say one thing, and then do another.    Some us also wonder about Leah Ann, a woman I have "known" for a year, who I have only the highest praise for (even though others may disagree) and who has done such an excellent job in making beautiful polish something that *everybody* can obtain ..... only to find herself bitten by the very person she was trying to protect.   Leah Ann has been policing ebay, weeding out resellers, when unbeknownst to her, the seller was getting them from Lynn all along.

So, next day, and more drama lol.   Traci TraceFace Philes, one of the nail world's biggest bloggers, and someone who helped build the demand for Lynns, announces she feels so sickened that she will never wear the product again and promptly holds a blog sale.  Others feel similarly, and have a bitter taste in their mouths.  At the time, I thought it was an over-reaction, until ....

Lynnderella blogs again.  Interestingly, she is starting to distance herself from Leah Ann.  The woman whom she once called a "genius" for her organisational ability, is now someone who is an "unlikely collaborator".  Leah Ann, who must feel like she's been planked over the head, announces she needs time to think.

And then this morning, we awake to another blog post from Lynn.  In a masterpiece of mis-judgement, she posts her long-planned post about her new collection, even when the masses are turning from her and baying, if not for her blood, at least for an apology or some humility.   Without a care in the world or a thought about her audience, she details all her new polishes, with a curious new graphic -

And in one fell swoop, kills all goodwill anyone may still have left for her.   What this woman, the largest producer of indie polishes has just done, is lowered the bar, and decided that it is acceptable to sell a product with flaws - flaws that you, as the polish maker are aware of - just because you're Lynnderella.  Worse, a lot of indies will now see this as a mandate to produce sub-standard and shoddy products.  Some of them will stop replacing faulty bottles, because, you know, even Lynnderellas have those issues.

This term "Indie" is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I cringe every time I hear or see it. Of course Lynnderella is an independent producer. What else would she be? Certainly not dependent. Yes, I know the word is used to label people who have small businesses. Even though I am one of the first small producers, I am opting out of the Indie Group Label. For me, creating is a joyful opportunity to express a unique voice that has been incubating and developing for a very long time. That's part of why I prefer to be left out of any category, label, list or "directory" of producers with whom I may have nothing in common.
Lynnderella 18 June 2012

And yet the woman who does not want to be part of this indie industry has suddenly, witlessly and unknowingly maybe, spoken for them all, and given them all license to drop their testing standards.   Don't get me wrong.  There are still MANY indie polish makers who should be respected and who will not reduce their standards one bit - and those are the very women who I will be supporting going forward.

Another thing I realized today is that I do not feel bad, sad, afraid, depressed, hurt or angry. There has been a bit of extra adrenalin over the past few days, but my conscience is clear.
Lynderella 20 June 2012

Last night Lynnderella opened an ebay shop.  And quoted the imperious and genuinely iconic Kate Moss - Never complain.  Never explain.   Ironically, Lynnderella keeps doing both.

As I got home tonight, I found out Leah Ann had dropped Lynnderella as a product line.   Lynnderella is suprised but uses it as an opportunity to pimp her ebay shop - where she is selling polishes for more than Leah Ann did.  My oh my.  How our morals and snobbery have fallen.

I am proud of Leah Ann for dropping Lynnderella.  No one person is ever THAT big, and let's face it, Lynnderella is also her own worst enemy AND the world's worst PR.   I also feel really sorry for Leah Ann.  In my eyes, I think she has only ever done the right thing, and now, I just feel she has been totally used to create MORE demand, so that someone can sell the "several thousand" bottles she has just made for $20 a pop.

It may or may not be relevant here, but I would appeal to Rhonni and anybody who is thinking enterprising thoughts - DON'T get sucked into this game.  If Lynnderella is half as special as she thinks she is, the Universe will deliver her an answer.  Personally, I think that answer might be able to be counted on 2 fingers, but hey ......

One final thought.   I only recently got my first Lynns.  This weekend, when Leah Ann made more stock available, I bought 6 more, knowing full well that if I did so, I wouldn't be doing a grocery shop this week.  Yup, I put polish before food, that's the kind of Polishaholic I am.

Now, sitting here, writing this, I feel sick at the thought of wearing them.  I feel sick that someone who we championed and who we put on a pedestal should be proven to have feet of clay and the integrity of a mongoose.   I am not sure I will ever want to wear them, as to me they now represent the hypocrisy, the ego and the self-aggrandisement of a brand gone bad.  Interestingly, in the last 2 days, all chatter of wanting to buy and wear Lynnderellas has died.

If we're not careful, and if we're not saved by some indiemakers with integrity, this could be The End of the indie bubble.  How ironic, if it should end up being popped by the woman who created it.

And that, goddesses, is the week that polish ate itself.

    1. I can't fathom why anybody would blame you. People are silly. PUBLIC information is just that, PUBLIC information. If Lynnderella and her brother didn't bother to cover their tracks more thoroughly on the PUBLIC websites they used, that's their problem. You did the right thing. I would always rather know the truth. BTW I love your blog! Cheers!

    2. What you have said/done is only what so many more were thinking or wish they had the courage to do. I have never owned a Lynn but I think I would have had the same reaction. Anyone who tries to "blame" you for expressing an opinion should' be ashamed.

    3. TraceFace, what is it you posted. It got deleted from the Llarowe Facebook page before I got a chance to see it, and I would love to know the truth.
      Never purchasing a Lynn polish!

    This is so brightly written.
I hear by announce that I will NOT buy any Lynn polish, nor will I keep any in my wish list. I only support the decent indie makers!

  10. Incredible post! I'd love to show this to my boyfriend so he could understand why we were so hurt about everything going on but, who am I kidding, he doesn't have that much attention span :P.

I do think the reason she added that little graphic is that she was tired of people nitpicking on her polish, saying it bled or that it was curling when she (supposedly) had a very rigorous testing system, so it was sort of an FU to people criticizing. Her saying "Yeah I know and if I say it first you can shut up about it" but the effect was exactly what you described, counterproductive. Sad that she thinks she's so powerful that we'll shell out $20 for imperfect polish.

    Wonderful writing, again.

  12. I think you just perfectly said what I have been feeling about this all week long. Someone posted in a polish exchange group that we should just stop talking about it and get over it, when in the grand scheme of things it isn't a big deal. While I agree with that in theory, what flabbergasted me most was the fact that this person who many had grown to admire because of her lovely polishes basically slapped those admiring girls right in the face. . . .with the back of her hand! And made no apologies for her abhorrent behavior and business practices. No one is to good or big to fail and I am hopeful that many of the awesome indie artisans out there will take this newly found opportunity to RUN with it and do what they do best. I look forward to supporting them. And thank you, Ms. Crumpet, for voicing what I'm certain many of us have been feeling all week. "Nail World" is full of madness! :)

  15. Lynn is a hypocritical fool. I have two of her polishes that, really are not that special, and I bought more interesting polishes fr half the price. I got Funny Money and Happy Holo Daze by chance. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but they really aren't worth $15 IMHO. I really haven't thought much of her since her mental break down over Connect the Dots. She pretty much makes me sick. I'm giving the two polishes to my friends who like them. I was going to sell them on Ebay, but I don't even want to put in the effort. Crumpet, you post here is dead on and I agree with everything you said. Let's hope she doesn't ruin the whole indi market. I guess like everything else it's buyer beware. There are a few makers that I know have the good stuff and there a few I will never buy from again. Funny you mentioned Victoriana, there one I will never buy from again. I got a refund for polishes that never arrived. Check feedback is all I have to say. $20 a bottle, who the hell does she think she is?

  19. WOW! Amazing post and summing up the last week. Yes it's been crazy, yes, it's just a nail polish but for most of us it's a big passion and the biggest hobby. That's why I understand the outrage on Lynderella's arrogant behaviour. There's no excuse. I don't own any Lynns and I probably never will ..

    1. Totally agree with this comment. ^ I've never liked much when people say "It's just nail polish," in regards to any situation, not just this one. Nails are a huge part of my life and I devote pretty much all of my free time to it -- because I love it. When people say "It's just nail polish" they are totally trivializing my passion, which obviously I don't like!

Anyway great post Debbie, and a nice summary for people that aren't as tuned in on the polish community.

  20. Perfect! Lynnderella has shown us all how to single-handedly destroy a business and make a complete fool of yourself. She has conducted herself absolutely disgracefully.

I personally never got the hype even in the beginning. Sadly though, people will continue to buy the over-priced rubbish.

  26. i have so many things i want to say about that woman, but i dont even know where to start.
just like last time she blabbed on her blog about how she was going to talk to lawyers about people stealing her so-called intellectual property over the sticks n stones fiasco i have had a big big big disdain for her.
she needs to get over herself and realize that she's not only lost of huge chunk of her customer base with this childish nonsense, but that every bottle of polish she fills includes that shitty karma and spreads. no one wants to buy bad attitude, lynnderella.
    but well spoken debbie.
im sure in a few months you'll want to wear those polishes. i was put off for awhile when she did this the first time. i wont ever support her business again, but i will still wear the one lone polish of hers i do own, just not right now!

  27. Thank you for summing it all up for us. It was a great (but also sad) read.

  28. Thank you for clearing that all up. My mouth totally dropped. Like others here, I have some choice words which I will not exercise beyond "You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me."

  29. I agree with you on this! Thank you for telling the whole story. I was trying to piece it together after a few days of not being on line. I must say that I have had very good luck with Indie polishes. I only have a few that I don't like. There are so many nice ones out there, and you can just buy them....amazing. I have a few lynns and I will still wear them because I like them. I a sure that this same type of stuff happens to the large polish lines also, we just don't hear about them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What a great summary of the events without attacking anyone. I mean her own words damn her. I totally agree that the major issue is the effect on the indie world. Lynn can shoot herself in the foot all she wants but its the idea of other indies deciding they don't need to be as vigilant (although yeah, those who care will still care and here's hoping that the ones with the two year old let's fling random glitter everywhere sensibilities will quietly disappear when no ones buying it) or as good with qc because Queen Lynn isn't that's the reply horrible part.

  31. Another salute from me! Thanks for the detailed and brilliant narrative. I have Lynnderella on my wishlist for a long time, but the troubles in getting them just put me off. Now, I just don't bother anymore!

  32. the mongoose is a very noble and loving creature.... other than that, well said, i had not gotten a chance to buy any of her polish and now i wouldn't want it if someone gave it to me. The thought that anyone would lower their own standards just to make a quick buck makes me furious as an artist. I franken polish for my friends and have not sold on the net, even though everyone loves them, because i was afraid of accidently making something similar to what someone else had after hearing about the explosion about the sticks and stones stuff.

  33. I had turned off social media this week to focus on family and the whole world went crazy while I was elsewhere. I got bits and pieces of what happened but couldn't put it all together. Thank you for this post. Now I know what I missed. I'm actually glad I missed it when it was going down.

  36. Beautifully written, funny as hell, and very clever and perceptive. Thank you!!!

Am I the only person who feels that Lynnderella is a walking personality disorder? You've only to read her blog entries to see it--she is volatile, mercurial, shifty, narcissistic, clearly lacking in empathy and utterly unwilling to take responsibility for her behavior and its consequences. Everything is always somebody else's fault; and she will throw ANYBODY under the bus (including people who thought she loved them) if they come up against her own interests. I would bet she has made and lost more friends than most of us have ever had friends to begin with. I've known a few people like her. They are usually wounded, struggling survivors but that doesn't excuse their behavior. Lynn is obviously talented and creative, and I know some people who say she can be very sweet. But one should never trust such a person.

I knew a woman JUST like her once. The trajectory of her creative career (she made lovely jewelry) really, really mirrors Lynn's public track record exactly. Brilliant, interesting, beautiful products, personally appealing individual who could be very charming and funny. But...rely on her at your own risk.

I dared to rely upon that friend of mine once; not only did she let me down, she hurled abuse at me and stabbed me in the back for daring to suggest that she ought to abide by the agreement we had made...or at least help me get out of the terrible fix she left me in. Which involved me having bought a ticket to fly all the way across the country to help her at a show. We were going to stay with her aunt, so I had rented neither a car nor a room. This woman backed out on me literally with six hours to spare; we'd been planning to do the show for several months. I couldn't cash in my ticket. I was out hundreds of dollars. I had nowhere to stay (on a booked-up holiday weekend) if I did go.

Many other people who knew her eventually all told me that the "reasons" she'd angrily given me were complete bullcrap and that she had lied; she just didn't feel like doing the show because she was "stressed". Most of all, what stunned me was that she was so self-righteously outraged by my pathetic little "but, but--what I am supposed to do now?" She couldn't BELIEVE that I dared to protest her astonishing behavior. Queen Narcissist, and probably bipolar as well. Her mood swings were uh-mazing. I never did get a simple apology.

I think if more people knew more about mental illness, they might not so easily trust people who behave like my ex-friend did--the way Lynnderella talks and behaves.

This is why I don't despise Lynnderella, and I'm not going to diss her, even though I think the worst of what she did with her brother. Now, I know some people will feel that my saying she is probably mentally ill/unstable IS a diss, but I assure you I don't mean it that way. Actually, I have sympathy for her. She is her own worst enemy and she doesn't seem like a happy person.

As for her creations--they are beautiful. I don't own many, but I don't dislike them. I won't buy more, but I won't toss the ones I have. (Just my response, others needn't feel the same obviously.)

Ib summary...I think I know how Leah Anne feels and I'm truly sorry.

    1. I completely agree with the personality disorder theory you put forth and from my background in psychology (as a health coach) tend to think it's what is called a combination of narcissistic pd and borderline pd. The latter always places themselves at the center of a drama. I actually mentioned this to Leah Ann at the beginning of their working partnership because based on seeing the drama on Lynn's old blog, I predicted that even patient, well organized, and upbeat Leah Ann could fail in her business efforts due to these unresolved issues. Counseling is a good idea, which in my mind carries no stigma. Although I have no knowledge of the specifics here, having worked with many families where family members are drafted into different roles, it would not surprise me if heroic efforts to help one's brother even leading to placing one's business at risk was an oft-repeated theme. But then again, this current economy is also a bummer for many people.

I also applaud Traci as a truth-teller and this blog is superb, thoughtful, and balanced. Like you, Crumpet, my nail addiction is only one year old, and the Lynndadrama has lead me to take a look at my own addiction. While it's "just polish," and it's just "pretty and fun," I see in myself (and would not be surprised if others also had) personal events or reasons in our lives or in this time we are all living in, that lead us to develop a nail polish addiction. This came up for me because in reading many blogs about these happenings, I noticed that I, along with many other nail addicts, felt angered, hurt, and disappointed by Lynn's behavior, but instead of un-hooking, still wanted to make sure that we could get our Lynnderella fix. There seemed to be an unwritten rule that we should discount our anger as too unpleasant, (or ourselves as "mean" for expressing it,) rather than admit the obvious: We're dismayed because we've lost one source of the supply addicts need-- in our case nail polish.

But I see a silver lining. All of this forced me to get real with myself. Beyond it's an addiction ha-ha, I saw this really IS an addiction. And it's one that this lovely community of people connect through and share with each other. As a result, saying that it's an addiction and maybe it's not just all fun, should not be a big no-no. Why? because we can support each other in sometimes giving in to our addiction, and sometimes in overcoming it. Admitting that I am using my disposable income, savings, or grocery money in this way isn't always easy. But it's easier for me to say it here than it is to others who don't share this addiction.

What you model here, Crumpet, and Traci as well, is that we don't need to put boundaries around our ability to be honest together. One of my favorite Traci blogs was what she shared after the death of a friend of hers. When people begin to awaken from their addiction, or if they have a life or health problem, they don't always feel that they can turn to this community-- so they go away. Often without a word. Think of Amanda Collier or Gabrielle Gaither of Edge of Sanity. What happened to them? No one knows because when we make it all about the latest polish buy, people can't come here when they have issues.

And that is a shame because if we didn't have issues, we wouldn't be addicts.

Beyond the addiction we share are some great people, so I would like to see the Lynnderella episode become a turning point in broadening the dialogue within the nail community. Personally, as a health coach, who helps people make good life choices for themselves, I would feel so much better about the absurdity of a health conscious person developing a polish addiction if five years from now we all could say, we still have polish, but we gave up a little glittah and we found a real community of support in tough times because that's what nail addicts need as much as a shiny top coat.

  37. I applaud you: you articulated my feelings rather well on this subject. I was temporarily baffled as to why you would need to count off 2 fingers for the Universe to give Lynn her just desserts, but then I remembered that things are a little different across the ocean. Be it 2 fingers or 1, I suspect you may be right on your speculation. I know several indie creators that still take pride in their work, and until that changes, I know there will at least be a few good people to support!

  38. Thank you for an ellegant piece, Lady Crumpet - it is so refreshing to see honesty without negativity over something so charged with emotion.
As a new comer to the Nail World, 'indie polish' and 'franken' were still new to me, and I have been hearing bits about 'The Days of Lynderella' from a few other blogs as well. How sad for Lynderella that she would take a course of action could cause such backlash to other dilligent indies striving to achieve what she apparently has thrown away. I've read her blog, and while it is indeed her right to control her products and distribute them as she sees fit, it has seemly elluded her that while the quality of her produces is a third of a successfull equation, it is her followers that complete the other two-thirds of the equation. Quality service goes hand in hand with quality products to be happily married before the follwers.
Again, as a new-comer, it is amazing to me to see how creative people are with their polishes and it is my sincere deire and wish that those who are striving to achieve what Lynderella has tossed aside, don't suffer to badly in the aftermath.

  42. I disliked Lynn ever since I saw her post detailing her reaction to Sticks N Stones- where she talked about getting a lawyer, and wondered if this is how Deborah Lippmann felt. As *if* she was on a level with Deborah Lippmann. Might big head, indeed. But, I still wanted her polishes and was looking forward to the wish lists. Ugh, ugh, ugh- I will not give any money to that woman. Especially not since her polishes are no longer that special with how many talented creators are out there- who APPRECIATE their fans and supporters.

Thank you for the amazing writeup!

  45. This is the most well written and amazing post I've ever read!! Thank you for summarizing the events of this week. I also thought I would let you know that I also bought 6 polishes from Victoriana probably on the same day you did. I never received my polishes and I ended up having to file a Paypal claim to get my money back. I am only posting this so everyone knows to stay away from her. I agree with you that most of the indie/etsy sellers are wonderful!! I truly hope that this fiasco with Lynn does not spoil it for the rest of them!

  47. Thank you for posting the entire story, and in such an objective manner. I have not, nor will I, buy a Lynderella. Even before all of this, I often wondered at the hype about her polishes...they were nice, but didn't seem worth all the wish-listing, etc. I have bought from no less than 12 Indie polish makers in the few months since I've "found" the polish community, and now have some VERY awesome polishes, and have "met" some wonderful ladies who really care about what they do. THEY are the reason I will always support Indies, despite people like Lynn, and I hope others will continue as well...

  48. The post was brilliantly written. It sums up the situation and feelings I have as well. I never got my hands on Lynnderella polishes and now I'm happy that I didn't. Her ego is insane. I will gladly seek out other amazing and credible indie polish brands. I really can't believe she wished to exclude herself from the "indie" label. And really decades? You would think in those decades she spent learning about polishes she would have learned a thing or two about good business manners.

    ReplyDelete
  49. As one who was a very public questioner of not only Lynn but Llarowe's business practices I applaud you for your concise and well written post on this. In a moment of weakness I broke down during the flash sale and purchased my first Lynn. I immediately regretted it, trying to somehow justify how I could buy this after all I'd said but I got sucked in. Then the real sleuthing began and the truth came to light and I was absolutely disgusted that I had given them both my business again. I sold that polish before it even arrived at my home. Sold it for cost might I add. Sure, I could have thrown it on eBay but that would have made me just as hypocritical as those I was turning away from and I couldn't do that.

For me, it's not so much that all of this happened, it's that people are so blinded by the name that they're still willing to pay this woman for substandard product. They are still clamoring to get their hands on a "Lynn" as if it is a trophy to be held high for all to see. To me that signals the beginning of the end. If the consumers do not hold the creators to a certain standard then who will? Lynn was a monster the polish community created and it continues to feed the beast and encourage subpar product and customer service as long as it's shiny. Only when people stop, think, and use the biggest weapon they have against these sellers, their wallets, will things truly change. Until then I'll give my business to those who deserve it. There are a few good ones left out there.

    2. I totally agree, Jen, and this is what addicts do. Addicts are desperate for their fix and Lynnderella was a superb marketer to that mentality. By with-holding product as she did, she helped fuel the addiction. Whereas Leah Ann's wish list helped calm people (like methadone treatment) while creating a higher volume of sales.

Some people and perhaps you are one who is able to put other considerations first. Seeing all of this and my own buy-in has really lead me to reflect. Thank you.

  50. Very well written. I thank you for summing it up for those of us who are outside the loop. It's such a shame, and I for one have a horrible taste in my mouth regarding Lynderella and I won't be buying any of hers. I never did buy any of hers in the first place, because there was too much hassle with it, and I'm glad I didn't get caught up in it. Now if I can only get my hands on Sticks N Stones haha.

  51. OH MY GOD, the polish community's first soap opera. How can someone represent themselves so badly? Even if you were a shitty person in real life, why not at least lie to us some more, doesn't anyone know how to run a fucking business? When you said it was being sold by her brother I literally gasped lol

I mean this is sad, I had really wanted to save up to buy some freakishly expensive indie glitter, and I'm still a little leary of when my indie buying month should begin..

It just really sounds like lynnderella is 14 years old. Freshmen in high school are always all "I'm not a poser, so not into labels.." and angsty and apathetic. bullshit. I might be open to the possibility of buying from a blog sale for uber cheap, but there's no way I would give money directly to someone like this..

This is a straight forward and accurate summary of some pretty confusing events, so thank you so much for this Debbie! I love the Lynns that I already own, but I am never buying any more. Seriously, who does Lynnderella think she is? It's just insulting to be so patronising to the people who have built you up to where you are!

  59. I just discovered your blog (I was pointed here to read this post), and I agree with all you say. It's a terrible shame that a wonderfully creative trend has degenered into this amount of drama.
There will always be good and bad indie sellers, like there are good and bad "corporate" nail polish brands. I will not go to ebay to pay 25$ for a bottle of polish of a subpar quality when there's a whole world of polish waiting to be discovered.

  61. I like to hold up Windestine as a polish maker who is a little *too* good at customer service. She refunded me for a polish because one of the glitters in her stock bottles had started curling. I hadn't complained (hadn't even noticed, and I have to look *really closely* at my bottle to see that the blue hexes are slightly curved) and if she had asked me if I wanted a refund, I would have told her to keep the money - I love the polish, and her polishes are low-priced for indie polishes to begin with. She also took the initiative and contacted all her customers to let them know that she had just found out that coated mixing balls run the risk of rusting over time, and offered to reimburse a portion of the price. I refused that one, as I would have done for the first refund if I'd been asked, and let her know that I'd just replace the balls myself, no biggee.

Still, her awesome customer service has guaranteed that I will be buying more polish from her in the future.

  63. Thank you for so eloquently voicing how so many of us have been feeling this week. I discovered the polish world back in November and have been thoroughly ensconced ever since. I can remember seeing Lynderellas for the first time and how so many of them became lemmings for me. I got my first ones in the last round of names for Llarowe's wishlists and by that time the excitement was almost zip because of the hassle and time just to get my hands on a few bottles of polish. This entire situation and Lynn's attitude towards her fanbase make me sick just thinking about wearing her polishes. It is a shame that too often such creative talent comes with such a narcissistic attitude. I really wish the best to Leah Anne after being put through this ordeal and hope the polish community doesn't suffer as a result.

  65. This was very well written! And you touched on a lot of concerns I've had with the ever growing indie/custom polish boom ever since it started. While there are some great ones out there, there really is no across the board quality control. It's very much a 'Buyer Beware' type of system.

  66. Wow her own brother, that's shady. I've always found Lynnderella's polishes beautiful, but over priced, I also found her tone/blog to be off putting so I would never purchase anything made by her. But damn they are beautiful colors I give her that!

I am one of those new indie polish makers, and I pride myself in making quality product, so when I saw "intentional bleeder" on the her blog I was shocked. One of my first colors bleed (even thought the glitter was suppose to be solvent resistant) and I immediately removed it from my site and replaced it to all who had purchased it.

I ordered, heard nothing for a long time, filed a paypal claim, Victoriana emailed then to say she had shipped them, so I (stupidly) cancelled my claim, and they never arrived. I can't reopen the claim or file a new one because of paypal's policies, so I'm out almost $50 bucks. So yeah, don't buy from Victoriana.

To me they represent my recently found love for INDIE ;) polishes as well as some of the fabulous blogs (like this one!) and people I have met because of nail polish. That being said, this is a very well written post. 75. I'm honoured to have found your Blog and read this Entry. And I will say, that I've sat back and watched carefully for a very long time this rise and fall of the indie polish makers. I, too, ascribe to making my own polishes but, I'm approaching things very cerebrally from the stance of not only a creative person, but as a working, in the trenches nail tech and what I will push forward next year, what will be the start of a full nail cosmetics line. I agree, like you said, that several glitters hastily mix'd (for profit) in a simple coloured base is oftentimes 'high-priced laziness' for many just trying to *quickly* squeak a few "easy" bucks out of the Community (of a sorts, but not all fit that description, so please, no "hate" comments, it's just my own personal opinion), and then again, there's amazing polish makers out there, too, thankfully....that set and keep the bar high and inspire and lift us all. :)

I'm adding this Blog to my blogroll and will come back often to admire your wry Wit...

    Merry meet!

I feel so bad for Leah Anne, because I agree it sounds like she totally got burned. I hope she (and her business) can recover from this and move on!

  77. Beautifully written!

Seeing all of this unfold has been fascinating, but not in a good way :( I never owned a Lynnderella, and her business practices have turned me off to her forever.

I just opened up my own indie shop this week, and when I see things like "intentionally bleeding glitter," it drives me nuts. Here I am, trying to create and test each lacquer so it is perfect, and then Lynn is selling something she *knows* is deficient. I just don't get it.

  78. Most excellent and entertaining recap, fantastic post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I've been catching glimpses here and there of the situation at hand, reading Lynnderella's own blog posts and noticing my e-mails from the Llarowe shop that the product was discontinued. I also made note to comment on people's swatches of Stick 'n Stones similarity to Connect the Dots without realizing the "pain" it had caused Lynn. But as you put it perfectly, it happens to Deborah Lippman all the time, professional companies constantly dupe each other...it's bound to happen!

I'll be honest, as an up-and-coming polish blogger, I always did crave Lynderella polishes, but never had the funds to purchase them (I spent $9 on Floam by Nail-Venturous, which is the most I've EVER spent on one bottle of polish, and the only "indie" polish I've ever bought!). But regardless, I'm still interested in indie brands, because they are a nice fresh breath from the big names I'm used to, and still love (give me China Glaze anyday!). Understanding this situation is helpful in gaining ideas of how to enter the indie realm, makes me understand makers deeper, and overall answers lots of questions as to people's attitudes lately.

So in general, thank you so much for the insight! :-D

  80. Wowza. I've seen references on various blogs to all the drama that surrounds getting Lynderella polishes and how it's a pain in the butt. I didn't pay much attention since they seemed a bit overpriced to me and I'd yet to see one that I felt I wanted to pay that much for. I had no idea that this was just the tip of the iceberg.

I stumbled across your post after looking for information on what had happened to NerdLacquer, which is the only indie polish I've purchased thus far (and which I loved). I definitely feel more educated now, at least about Lynderella!

Success can led to self-implosion, without a doubt. Too bad that Lynderella has shot herself in the foot and shown contempt for her original fans. I still don't know what happened with NerdLacquer, but too bad there also, as Amanda was experiencing a degree of success as well.

  81. Debbie,

I love that there are hundreds of comments and replies to this post and EVERY SINGLE ONE agrees with you.

That just goes to show what the nail community as a whole is looking for in an INDIE ;) polish company and what kind of business practices they respect and expect as a customer. And it's obvious that the "high-and-mighty" Lynnderella is NOT it.

Even though I've never purchased from Llarowe, I know many ladies that have and are happy with their transactions and interactions with Leah Anne personally. I feel really bad that she's been caught up in this. It seems like she got burned and I hope it doesn't effect (affect? LOL) her sales in any way.

I've never understood the hype of Lynnderella's polishes, especially for the price. Her blog posts have always been a bit arrogant, IMO and the shenanigans she started with CtD was just laughable. I think that incident is what kicked her off her "pedestal" and she did it all to herself.

Hopefully, this incident will shine a light on other INDIES out there looking to make it because, there are alot of talented ladies out there with lots of pretty polishes for sale!!

Thanks for the awesome post!! Your blog posts are always a hit! xo

  86. Brava!!! Excellent post.

I got my Lynn's from Llarowe (the wait list). I briefly wondered if I could wear them....and decided yes....because I bought them from Leah Ann--who has ALWAYS been an incredible businesswoman & friend to me.

Even knowing the wishlist was up in the air, I looked at the "new line" and made up a list....but each time Lynn opened her "mouth" I just had to laugh at the arrogance and snobbery that dripped from every word. News flash "You are not that special".

So--no more Lynns for me, ever. I found some absolutely FANTASTIC indie polishes that I love even more (and cost a hell of a lot less to boot). Llarowe is going to carry some new lines which I am thrilled about.

I'm not judging anyone who still buys her polishes--or even at what cost. I have to do what I think is right in my mind. But the maker? Oh yeah, Karma will come around.

    Rock on ;)

  89. Honestly I'm on the fence about the whole Lynnderella drama. I didn't know much about lynns or care that much about them until I found Lean Ann's site this year. I knew it was going to be to much of a hassle to get her polishes so i didn't bother..but when the wish list were finished I decided to give her polish a try and buy one. Sense I wasn't crazy insane about getting a polish, the email update about her brand being dropped didn't really bother, but I could only imagine the disbelief and pissed off looks on peoples faces who were waiting for that wishlist only to find out it was no longer happening. Anyways, in this is just my opinion, I think the drama and who's to blame for it is not only Lynn but customers themselves. All this drama would have never occurred if people weren't so wrapped up on getting a bottle of polish that they needed to spend all that time just to dig up some dirt on why they couldn't get one. Lynn's would probably still be on Llarowe right now if people didn't posting all the drama on Llarowes Facebook. So that also gave Lean Ann mega grief that she didn't need. Now onto Lynn, yes she did kind of kick herself in the ass by secretly selling her polishes on ebay through her brother and not being up front about it, but my thing is its her polish so she can do whatever the hell she wants with it. Then again you cant go complaining about how you your polishes are being sold on ebay when your doing it as well..and for outrageous prices. So I'm convinced that this entire shit storm was created buy Lynn and crazed polish customers on Facebook..no means to offend anyone but that's how I feel about the whole situation. I also I'm new to your blog..Really like it! =)

  91. I was thinking about buying some Lynn polishs but then I just got pulled into the hype by seeing a blog on Lynns new "business". I have found out the following and here are my thoughts. Lynn calls herself a "snob" (go see her blog) and she is that from what she is doing.
I wouldn't buy a thing from this woman. She is selling her polish on Ebay for $800.00 a bottle not only is it questionable but if she is actually getting the money and the sell is for real she is just proving she is all about the money.

I can't believe someone who calls herself an "artist" and tells of her hard upbringing would throw over Leah, the very woman who made Lynn a household name.

I hope how soon Lynns Ebay ripoffs end and she sees that being a "snob" will get you no where. I will buy from Leah as she actually cares about her customers and is not breaking her customers like Lynn.

    ReplyDelete
  92. On another note I read that as per Ebay policy Lynn should not be able to sell her "homemade" polish because it is not approved by the FDA for saftey of mixing the chemicals and although Lynn calls herself an "artist" she is not that or a chemist!
She opened it, she made it, and when Ebay finds out a polish is mixed by anyone it is taken down. Especially by a person with no FDA certification. So from reading the blogs I suspect her $700 dollar polishes are so out there in your face obvious that they will probably be ban from Ebay soon. All I can say is I won't be sorry to see Lynn fade into blog posts oblivion.

  93. Thanks Crumpet - I was just as confused as everyone else. Although I went to her website and wondered: this woman has seriously started to refer to herself in the 3rd person?!
    Amazing.
Then I read how she was horrified about the selling of her polished on ebay and then decided to use it to her (her brothers) advantage... just..... *sigh*... crazy crazy crazy.
My brother had a drug problem for 20 years. From 11 to 31. He's been sober for a wonderful 7 months. I don't know her or her brother. But I DO know the words and excuses of a codependent sister. No good can come of this. And OBVIOUSLY - NO GOOD IS.
I totally agree with an earlier commenter: she is most MOST worthy of our pity. Because she has crazy hot mess of self-destruction written all over her, her blog and her nail polishes.

  97. I appreciate this post very much. Too many are tip toeing around this whole thing. A blog who cares enough about people to shine a light on the truth and gives a forum for discussion is a damn good blog. More really need to step up and be like this, there would be less of the bad.

So I came here with my questions becuase I feel safe enough to get answers.

    1. Why do nearly all of her high dollar auctions end at the same prices? I promise I mean the auction style, not the Buy It Now style. I just find it far too much of a coincidence to see a dozen bidding auctions ending at $750. Not a penny more or less.

The numbers change but when you look in past auctions you can see them in large groups. 750s 800s It's extremely unlikely that it happened by coincidence. It looks like someone is blatantly bidding up prices to a certain point.

3 to 4 times more then the highest I've seen Essie's SSN or Clarins 230. How is bleeding glitter and bad business sense worth nearly one grand? It's just fishy to me.

    2. I only ask this next one becuase of the amount being sold and the price it's being sold at. I am not knocking Indies as a whole this is for her...

If she has been training for DECADES and (insert all the big headed egotistical bragging, don't call it an Indie either speech) why is she selling on Ebay?

These are handmade cosmetics out of hazardous chemicals. Many made from other nail polishes that had to follow rules themselves. If she is so amazing that her own polish can rack up as much money as Ebay shows, why no FDA approval? Why no business license? Why no real business?

Could it be becuase she isn't as good as she thinks she is and stores would not sell bleeding glitter. Or she doesn't have enough of her OWN recipes with out using other brands and would fail FDA approval? Or does she not want to have to pay the costs to do such things?

You really have to be an unstable person to toot your own horn so much, somehow make a fortune but not have to do a damn thing like other "businesses" in the "art" industry have to. Not even the cosmetics industry. Remember these are not hand made sweaters these are bottles of chemicals that she is pumping out like mad with no one watching.

This question from the speech, the decades of "training" speech and other horn tooting being shoved into our faces while she is pumping out bottles of curling, bleeding glitter... on EBAY.

    4. Does Leah Ann know most of us don't believe that woman's crap talk when she shoved her under the bus? It's obvious she worked hard for a very ungrateful person and continues to do a lot for other Indies. I feel very sorry for her, it seems Miss Lynn will shove anything under the bus as long as its to save herself from having to be knocked down a peg to humility.

    2. ha ha loved your points thought! The ebay bidding is covered in another post you'll find in the Popular Posts section. I feel for Leah Ann too - it was very ungrateful and don't get me started on "intentionally bleeding glitter" lol x

I hope it works for you. If not then if you head over to this blog.. they did a post specifically for it. It's about Lynn Shill bidding practices on Ebay and some other things.

Never mind! This is so embarrassing. Just ignore my post above. Good grief can I mess up my posts any more? My auto correct made my first a mess of continuity and now I'm blazing in like I have some sort of breaking news.

I finally found the post you made that included the information I listed above. I was looking for one with just Lynnderella in it instead of an even better post that included other important things, totally missed it.

I guess I am just a little riled up. I own some of this woman's polishes so it really sickens me to see that our money was not good enough for her, she would rather attempt to scam people. People who just wanted a little bottle of polish that she made "with love".

Again very sorry for the crazy posts.

  99. OMG!!! This is like a soap opera, except not so funny becuse it is happening to real people. I admire all of you who spoke up, at risk to their own reputation, to inform the community of not so admirble behaviour. Sure explains why Lynderella polishes are so expensive on ebay! ( I never quite got the ridiculous prices when there is so much else to choose from ) Shame it has had such a trickledown effect on indie polishes. I'm new to the polish community so have only dealt with one or two, and so far all good. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out for Lynderella. Wonder if she'll pop up again under another guise? I am so grateful to have read these blogs!

  100. I saw the prices on the eBay store, and I have to say - good or bad, there is no way I am shelling out $20+ for a bottle of polish. I don't care how special it is. But now, after reading your article? I wouldn't buy if she were selling for $1 a bottle.

I go out of my way to support mom and pop stores in my community, and I have really just recently discovered indie brands that I am also supporting - the people that appreciate the support, that have pride in their product, and the ones who don't feel it necessary to climb up your back to stand on your shoulders to look down at the minions beneath them.

I enjoyed reading the article - it was very well written.
