Indies - The Good, The Bad, and the Lynnderella ...

Hi Goddesses

Today's post is mainly about 2 things - our love of Indie polish, and She Who Must Not Be Named.

I Like My Polishes Unique

I'm gonna start with the important stuff first :)   You may have noticed that a few weeks ago, this badge appeared in my sidebar.  I don't know who created it, but a lot of the cool Indie Sellers I follow started sharing it, and I was and am proud to add it to my blog.

Since then, I've also proudly reviewed polishes for some of our best Indie sellers, and there are more on the way.  These sorts of polishes are the only ones I will do "pure" swatches of from now on, and I am proud to support these women in their creativity, enthusiasm and passion.

I wanted the badge to MEAN something though, so the blog is going to undergo a sort of Indie-vention, and get Indie'd up a little.  Coming very soon is Indie Corner, a separate page (which you'll be able to see in that little header bar beneath The Crumpet) that will feature all sorts of Indie Feasts for the Eyes!

So Indie Corner will feature Indie Sellers that I have used, with my opinions on them, links to how to find them and follow them, and links to any blog posts I've done about them, all surrounded by oodles of droolworthy photos!  I hope you agree that that's something worth looking forward to.

This week is also the week that my Lynnderella Rockafeller post topped 10,000 hits.  10,000!  That's just c-razzzzy!  I remember ending that post worried that the woman who started it all might have ruined it all for everyone else, but happily, the story is ending differently.   So what's happened since my original post (which you can read here).

Well, Lynnderella is selling her wares on eBay, but we knew that.   Her new Collection seems to have bombed.   And all the love has gone ....

So, let's look at eBay first.   When I first posted my LR post, another blog, Polish Pixelle was also posting about the drama.  Effectively, my post was sandwiched between 2 of hers.  Someone commented on her 2nd post about the Limited Edition polishes Lynn had posted on eBay - you may remember that the bidding reached $800 or something - and at the time, Polish Pixelle took a lot of backlash for it.

At the time, I just shook my head, and couldn't be doing with it, which is why I didn't post about it.  If someone wanted to spend so much time researching and writing that Google doc, then so be it, but I had deliberately tried to avoid being overly judgemental in my post, and I didn't really want to change that.

Anyway, this weekend, someone alerted me to the fact that AGAIN all the LE Lynnderella bids were finishing at EXACTLY the same amount - $700.  Now, isn't that just WEIRD?  Whatever you think of Lynnderella, what are the odds that every time she releases LE polishes, they will ALL be sold at the exact same price, and all the bid details will be kept "secret"?   Personally, I can't be bothered to dig into it too much further, but it smells wrong.  I've watched enough Gil Grissom to distrust coincidences, and this is just so fishy it practically comes with its own pond.

So, weird eBay bids (here) .... and weird eBay polishes.   Whilst I was being curious, I stumbled upon a red-orange maelstrom of semi-loveliness ..... and frowned.  It looked VERY similar to Muy Caliente by Glimmer by Erica which I swatched yesterday (here).  Let's take a look at them side by side -

I contacted Erica to ask for her thoughts - were they as similar as I thought, or were the pixels deceiving me?  Erica agreed, and with a minor exception in the shape of one glitter, they are similar.   Which then raises the following thought - for the woman who cursed those who were duping her, has she now started to dupe others ?

To be honest, I don't know.  What I do know, is that time and again Lynnderella has back-tracked over pretty much everything she's done or said, which leaves her right now with zero credibility .... and a collection which doesn't seem to be selling ....

Now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I can probably count on 1 hand how many bloggers I have seen swatching Lynn's new Collection.  Personally, I don't even like it, (and I LOVED her previous stuff) but that's irrelevant.   Consider this - before the initial drama, Lynn would have sold her polishes to Llarowe, who would have sold them on to us, the polish lovers, many of whom are bloggers, and some of whom might have received the polishes in review packages to generate publicity and interest.  I try not to be negative, but I do love that karma seems to have bitten an enormous chunk out of her backside - where's her sales now ?

And this leads me to the end ... and back to the beginning.  I have officially had it with Lynnderella now.  You may have seen me sell several Lynns in my blog sale, well, the remainder are going on sale very soon too.  I honestly can't bear the thought of wearing them.  Why ?  Because the woman they are associated with stands for every value I am personally against - she lies, she's egotistical, she bit off the hand that feeds, she betrayed the trust of her closest business partner ... and there's those fishy eBay sales - and every time I look at one of her polishes, my stomach curdles with distaste.  So, they're for sale.

Contrast this to the amazing Jenna of Lacquistry, who took it upon herself to replace 500 bottles of polish she sold A YEAR AGO because she has now noticed that SOME OF THEM bleed.  What integrity! v what intregrity ?

And that's why Indie Corner is being born.  To champion people like Jenna (who I have never bought a single polish off by the way) and the dozens like her who are providing great polishes, great service and who LOVE all the polishaholics.

It's going to take a while to build, so you'll see it evolving week by week, but wow, what a place it will be.

Enjoy xx :)

  1. I have quite a few of Jenna's creations and I have to say that are my faves out of my whole stash and she is totally lovely to deal with I cannot wait to spend some more of my money with her :)

  2. I "found" Jenna a year ago and have bought and swapped a half dozen of her lovelies- she replaced two that I had no idea needed replacing- what integrity indeed!
And Debbie, this is such truth- keep up the good work darling!

    1. I think the point is, no indie seller (and yeah, Lynnderella's an indie seller whether she likes that term or not) can definitively bitch about how people appear to be copying some of their polishes, when so-called "dupes" crop up all the time. Sometimes it's intentional and sometimes it's not, and you can't always tell. If you cry dupe on someone else, you never know when someone may say the same of one of your works, even if it was independently inspired.

    2. Hilaire, that wasn't my point, but Cathy has replied better than I could x

      Delete
    3. Cathy, there is a huge difference between an unintentional similarity and someone flat out saying "hey this is a dupe" - Cover Band flat out duped and admitted to it directly on their sales page.

      Delete
    4. Are you serious with accusations of Lynn duping a polish that is just red, yellow, and purple? Is this the twilight zone?

      Delete
    5. Regardless of dupes or no dupes I think most of us can agree that Lynn has showed her true colors over the past several months. And has purposely ostracized herself from a very close knit community of bloggers and indie sellers. She condemns people constantly for doing the same things that her herself could possibly be guilty of. She is a childish spiteful person and Debbie is not alone in saying she is no longer impressed by her polishes. In fact I'd go as far as to say she is in the majority.

  4. This is great! Once again you have summed up all my thoughts like you were reading my mind. Muy Caliente is an amazing polish! I can't wait to buy a bottle! And many more of her polishes! How can Lynnderella market herself as the first indie maker? I remember seeing Hare Polish (for one) around much before i had even heard of Lynnderlla. I have a few of Lynns polishes but they are really no better quality than any other Indies i have, there is nothing that remarkable about them. In fact they make me feel quite disgusted right this minuet. Thank you for writing another great post, someone needs to be the voice of reason and be the 'watchdog' for the everywoman of the polish world keeping us informed- only this way can we enforce a protest against her intolerable practices.

  5. Love this post and love what you and Lacquidistry did that is a real polish maker with a love of polish and the people that buy from her. Your both amazing great posts

  6. I got teary eyed reading about Jenna from Lacquistry. She has my heart. I have been buying from her since I fell in love with nail polish! She was the first indie I ever bought and I have shelled out HUNDREDS of dollars for many many of her creations! She replaced four of my polishes that were apparently bleeders, even when I told her not to, and I think she is the epitome of honesty and integrity. I can not wait for her shop to reopen so that she can be blessed back for what she has undertaken. I too have been DONE with Lynn.

  10. I am not sure what to say except for THANK YOU for saying what so many others have been thinking. That and maybe that Jenna is amazing! I got a random message from her the other day asking for my new address so she could replace a polish that had bled. I hadn't even noticed because I had moved and then spent 2 months living with my mom while she healed from surgery and had to cut my nails off while doing so, so I hadn't painted them recently.Sorry for the ramble, Jenna is amazing, most every indie polish maker has been nothing but a joy to deal with.

  11. Totally true! As someone who just recently got into the Indie craze, I have gotten over the fact that Lynnderella polishes are out of reach. But it is her loss that she has taken away the sheer joy and excitement of me and others when we rush to the mailbox and receive our new found treasures. She has pretty much forgotten the people who got her to where she is now.

  12. I am SOOO excited for your Indie Corner!! I love so many of the indie polishes that I see for sale, but I'm usually uncertain about buying them because I don't know what they'll look like on. So to have someone (with great knowledge about polishes!!)swatch them is so helpful to me. Thanks!!!!

That's an incredible accusation when the 2 pictured polishes above do not really resemble each other.

Another incredible accusation is the one about how her collection sucks and that she is not making sales. If you went so far as to look at her eBay history, why did you not make a point to actually check all her sales?

From August 12th til now, she sold 72 FULL summer sets. This is not including partial sets or individuals. That is over 20 thousand dollars in about 2 weeks. Is that what you consider "bombed"?

And a word of advice for those reading:
Yes, Lacquistry is an awesome indie seller. But there are NOT many like her. Erica from Glimmer for one has tacos in all her polishes. There are literally hundreds of indie sellers out there. There are maybe a dozen who provide excellent customer service that Lacquistry does. I would suggest for anyone to take a closer look and research a lot before just buying a polish that simply looks pretty.

      Delete
    3. Hello Bored, this is Erica from Glimmer By Erica. There are most certainly NOT "taco" glitters in all my polishes. I had two glitters that did taco and I have replaced them in ALL subsequent bottles. If you had bothered to do your research MoreNailPoilish posted on her blog when she reviewed my polishes that I had fixed the problems with the only two that did warp. Please make sure you know what you are talking about before you go spouting off. Thank you.

      Delete
    4. Bored of the Drama26 August 2012 04:46

Two glitters? Mamita, I suggest you do research on your own polishes, then. Because I count the large lavender hex glitters in Drizzt, the medium purple hex glitters, large blue hex glitters, and the small orange glitters in Twilight Sky. That is already four glitters in two polishes. Macro shots don't lie.

      Delete
    5. The purple glitter, and the large blue glitter are the only ones that warped. The orange glitter in TS didn't bend at all. It is actually .10 mm metal flake purchased from an automotive paint supplier. It can't warp. Since I made each and every one of my polishes I know that I only ever had two that warped. This is the last post I will make here, and that is to say that ALL glitters that warped have been replaced with glitters that don't warp. So, if I may, what difference does it make that in my first ever batch of polish I had two that warped and have subsequently changed?? It was a mistake that has been corrected.

    6. Hey Bored of the Drama maybe you should rethink your name. It seems to me that you are stirring up trouble where there is none to be had. I and several of my friends have polishes from Glimmer and guess what no taco glitters! So maybe you should go back and do your homework.

  15. I totally agree. I sold my Lynns and will never wear/purchase another again.

  16. Lynn has lost my business as well, 72 people that can drop 300 bucks each to add to their collection, or resell at a profit is not the same as 800 people each buying one to enjoy as their "best" polish-

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. However, it's NOT the same kind of word of mouth advertising that is the best kind since it's friends telling other friends about this wonderful new polish they came across. So instead of Lynn getting 800+ kind of people telling friends, she's only got 72+ people that have already purchased what they want so they won't be back for more of the same polish, whereas the 800 people that purchased only one polish might have well came back for an additional one or two more polish....so in the bigger picture, it IS better for her to strive for the higher number of customers rather than the smaller number.

      Delete
  17. You realize that most of these LEs are remakes of her original frankens from 2010 and earlier, right? So, unless Erica was selling back then, I doubt Lynn copied her. Erica has, oh, 60 or so followers on her Facebook page? Give me a break. Pathetic cry for attention in hopes of selling her taco slop-in-a-bottle.

    1. Missy, please see above reply to Bored. I am an honest indie polish maker trying to do the right thing. I have NEVER seen a pic of a Lynnderella polish that looks like MY Muy Caliente, and since hers is labeled "NEW" what does that tell you? My facebook page is new, that is the reason I don't have many followers yet. Please don't sling any mud unless you know what you are talking about. The only two polishes I had that had taco glitter have been changed. None of my polishes have any taco or bleeding glitter. Please don't say anything about my polish unless you can say firsthand that you know what you are talking about because obviously you don't.

      Delete
    2. Erica I love your polish, I've never had any problems with the glitters at all. Missy I think anyone that gets on a blog and starts trash talking someone with no reason to do so is the one crying for attention.

  18. Wow Anonymous, your not-using-your-real-name is ballsy. It's hard to take someone seriously when they can't own up to their rants. I see your life is soooo busy yourself that you're trollin' like a boss.

"Contrast this to the amazing Jenna of Lacquistry, who took it upon herself to replace 500 bottles of polish she sold A YEAR AGO because she has now noticed that SOME OF THEM bleed. "

It's because she is truly a polish enthusiast and *cares* about the community as well as putting out a good product. Polish enthusiasts aren't just cash cows to her.

She's probably using dummy accounts to bid them up super high, and then doing second-chance offers to the next highest bidder (a real person) so she can get the highest possible price. It's obscene that people pay that much for one polish, especially from someone who's been so awful.

Oh, and the reason the comparisons can be poked at for being similar, is because ANY TIME an indie polish maker made something *similar* Lynderella had a self-righteous bitch fit (Remember "Sticks & Stones"/ "Connect The Dots" anyone?)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lynn may be raking in the $$$ on her new collection but she has lost a lot of credibility and left a bad taste in people's mouths. I never had to the patience to even TRY to buy one of her polishes but still felt a tiny stab of betrayal after reading everything that went on.
So...yeah, she made a ton of money regardless. Ciate also made a ton of money selling it's rip off manicure sets(caviar&velvet) and yet when I read the reviews they are hugely negative and have turned a lot of people off buying their stuff.
These brands can still make money but if they keep shafting their customers it will eventually hurt them.

Also, I can only imagine you anons know deep down that Lynn done goofed or you wouldn't be hiding on anon. Eh?

There hasn't been a single nice post about Lynnderella in a long time and yet from the looks of it, she is still making a TON of money. It almost seems like all this 'bad' advertising is just making people want Lynns more.

Maybe if you are all so fed up and done with her, you could try not talking about her eventually? All this constant need to rant about her and cause drama is just making you chicks look real whiny.

  23. I still do like Lynnderella polishes.. Well not all of them but some. Regardless of her behavior I'll still use mine since I purchased them before any of this happened and since I do like them.
I won't ever pay the insane ebay prices but I will swap polishes for them. I do not condone the things I have read about her, and it does leave a bad "taste" in my mouth. I don't agree with animal testing but I love Mac. Maybe I'm an awful person >.<

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why is no one posting about Lynn anymore? Because most of us that still love her polishes don't want to deal with the drama and foaming at the mouth that her haters love to show up with. You so much as say 'Lynnderella' and people flip out.

Lynn's been selling a TON of her collection. Ebay isn't the only measure of that succes- for one, a lot of us have heard the rumor that you can contact her brother on Ebay to buy individuals from him for $21. But why would people blog about it when you're going to have to wade through the large number of people complaining about Lynn, complaining about how they look like something they could create (fat chance, most knock offs are horrible impersonations), or making fun of the price? Just not worth it.

I do think Muy Caliente is very pretty, but it looks nothing like the Lynnderella bottle, except that they both contain gold/red/orange (imagine that, multiple people using a popular color scheme). And I would bet if you swatched Lynns, it would be a lot more complex, because her polishes tend to have a ton going on. You can already tell from the photo there's multiple sizes of glitter and shimmer in it.

  25. I don't think those 2 polishes look like dupes to me. there's just too many difference. one seems to have a lot of purple to it.

The two polishes compared here, do look very similar, but they don´t seem dupes. Of course since I haven´t seen them IRL then I can´t really comment on that.

  27. wow, that was quite a lot of comments to wake up to! Personally, I like that everybody has different opinions on this subject - I certainly don't expect people to always agree with me, what a boring world that would be. To answer one or 2 accusations, I certainly didn't sit here and think "ooooh what post can I write to get some hits" - and anyone who follows my blog will know that's not how I roll. For those of you who support Lynnderella, that's fine, and I don't attack you for supporting her, and I certainly wouldn't make personally abusive comments about you purely because you held a different opinion to me. The purpose of this post was not to focus on Lynnderella, it was to focus on Indies, and as Lynnderella is part of the Indie scene, she was included in the post. After my original Lynnderella Rockafeller post, I didn't expect to be discussing her again, but her actions and words posed questions to me which I thought were worth asking.

I would never buy her polishes for the reasons you listed. Thank you for sharing your reasons and what I will assume is your honest reason for selling your stash of her polishes :) You make a good point - I hadn't thought about the bids ending at roughly the same prices. The whole things smells fishy but regardless, I'm not going to buy polish from someone who refers to themselves in 3rd person :b

  33. *face palm* this topic has been beat to death. And then beaten to death again. If you want Lynnderella to go away, why keep talking about her and blogging about her? It makes no sense. I agree with the comment that says you are giving her free advertising by continuing to post like this. Let's be real, Lynn did not copy a small indie brand. It's pretty common to pair red, orange, and yellow together. Even you mix has a pre mixed glitter with those colors. Did they copy Erica too? And for what it's worth, these two polishes look nothing alike. Same colors, and that's about it. Making something out of what it's not is really just ridiculous and screams of looking to stir up drama. How many people got bashed so far in these comments? Is it worth it to keep bringing this topic up if so many people get torn up in the process?

    1. Hi Kristen. My post does not ask Lynnderella to go away. I don't "keep" blogging about her - in over 700 posts, this is only the 2nd. I completely appreciate that there is a wide range of opinion out there about Lynnderella, from fervent supporters to ambivalence to people who are sick of her. My purpose was to raise questions rather than make dogmatic statements. I'm also not saying she copied Erica's polish, I'm just asking the question. Finally, I don't look to stir up drama, and neither do I "keep bringing this topic up". This is probably my last Lynnderella post, but as a blogger, I reserve the right to post what I want on my blog, and if there are any further developments that I think will be of interest to my readers, I will do so. If people don't want to read it, that's absolutely fine - they have the adult ability to choose not to read it. Thanks

    2. I'm sorry but this topic hasn't been beaten to death. New things are happening as time goes on. People should be thankful for the information, as many are. It's not like Lynn topics are far away from the topic of Polish blogs. It's about nail polish, Lynn is (to put it bluntly) cheating people and has caused a LOT of drama over her nail polish. If OPI had terribly faulty product and instead of fixing it went on a bizarre hypocritical rampage over and over then decided to sell exclusively on Ebay for $1,000 a bottle I am sure you would want updates. I know all of that sounds nuts and that's becuase it is.

It's very upsetting to those who loved the polishes, spent money on them or got burned by her. Please don't make the writer of this blog feel she should keep quiet. Being quiet doesn't stop it. Speaking up and informing protects and helps to stop it.

I wish more blogs discussed this.

And it just sucks even more to think that she maybe the one manipulating the bids on Ebay. I think most people dislike dishonesty.

  40. For those of you who are moaning about how the topic has been truly exhausted, you are free not to read it. There are others who regardless of which side of the fence they're on who would just like to be informed of what's happening.

A big thanks to Ms Crumpet's for summarizing the "news" for readers like me who only know bits and pieces of it. Great writing so keep it up! =D

  41. Thanks for the link. I still love the old Lynn polishes I have, but I also came to the same conclusion as you.

  42. Indie corner is going to be a great help. When it comes to Indies it's very hard for me to make decisions and some of that is becuase of the whole Lynn situation.

    So I think it's wonderful.

That link with the document of information, I feel it's spot on. I've noticed so much going on with her Ebay. Her game is blatant and disgusting. What's sad is the money and admiration people had for her was not what mattered to her. It's the money. Now she is trying to cheat those who cared for her and still do. People who just want the "art" she claims are in those bottles. How can she sleep at night knowing she cheated people like that?

Blogs like yours serve an even bigger purpose besides being wonderful assets to the polish communities. You care enough to shine a light on the truth in order to help others. That makes you one of the best blogs on the web. Thank you for doing this.
